Waste packaging reductions seem to be at the top of many companies’ agendas, with a number of large organisations pledging to cut their waste packaging in a number of ways.
However it’s achieved, less waste is better for the environment, and can contribute to significant cost savings too.
If you’re looking to cut down on the amount of packaging waste that you produce, here are three suggestions that could help.
- Reduce your materials. You may think you’re being thorough, but too many packaging materials can cause problems for your customers. Some void fills, plastics, and boxes can be difficult for customers to dispose of. They may even need to accumulate large quantities before recycling companies will be prepared to come and collect it. This means large amounts of waste building up, occupying valuable space and possibly not being disposed of correctly. If you streamline your packing materials, and use only what you need, you can cut down on packaging waste and save money in the process.
- Use better quality materials. Low-cost materials have a lower initial outlay which can make them seem more attractive when compared to higher-cost, better quality alternatives. But often it’s true that you get what you pay for. If it’s low-cost it could be low-quality too. If your materials are ineffective (for example, tape that fails to adhere, or film that punctures) then you can end up using more to strengthen or cover weak areas. You may even end up repacking the goods completely. Don’t get trapped in a false economy; use quality materials from the start, and ensure that you only need to pack once.
- Choose your materials wisely. Are you buying in large quantities of packing materials that take up space, and then don’t get used? Try an on-demand system instead. Void fill like air cushions can be inflated as and when required, so they’re easier to store and straightforward to handle. These systems can also save time on the packing line, as they can be constantly produced. If you want to take it a step further, you can even turn your packaging waste into effective on-demand void fill; used cartons and board can be transformed into flexible matting or cut strips using a carton shredder.
